Located in northwest Ethiopia, the Amhara region is mostly mountainous, with Lake Tana at its center, and the regional capital Bahir Dar on the southern shore of the lake.
In Bahir Dar the economically disadvantaged sections of the community like women and children are extremely vulnerable to social crisis, in particular the impact of HIV/AIDS. The remote rural areas of the region are characterized by poor infrastructure development and widespread poverty with very low access to and quality of basic services, such as health and education.
From 2013 Amare npo has started an important collaboration with DASSC, the Committee on development and social services of the Ethiopian Evangelic Church Mekane Yesus that operates in the city, supporting activities for the women and youths' microenterpreneurship.
The first Amare npo's project in Bahir Dar, in 2013, allowed the social-economic emancipation of 63 women of the city. The project includes single mothers, often HIV-positive. They receive the capital needed for starting small business activities, that give them the income needed for supporting them and their children. The project includes: the donation of the capital needed for starting the business activities, periodic professional trainings and the creation of help-to-help groups.
The project positively finished on November 2013.
